More seriously, the Carlyle has this atmosphere almost unique in NYC of an old grande dame, where all rooms are different (most of them), which still has some history (elevators are so nice). The public area keep an old charm and do not have the more traditional hotel feel of a FS or MO. It is almost a house where you will enjoy a cup of tea or listen to great music in the evening. The spa is beautiful and has a great entrance !

The Surrey is a bit trying to move between trendy, residential, classic and you are a bit lost because it might give the impression that the hotel did not find the right atmosphere. The entrance is nice, but gives a trendy feel with the bar on the left. The rooms are much more classic and have a sort of "déjà vu" feeling. The spa is very nice, small and very cosy.

The Mark has the greatest service between the three, very attentive, it may be one of the best service in town. The decor is beautiful with all this Grange furniture, this elegant black and white. It may nevertheless lack of public spaces (one bar, one restaurant...)and the bar is not as nice and elegant as the rest of the hotel imo.

The Pierre is IMHO not a good choice and I do not like its renovation which seems in many parts (corridors, entrance...) unfinished. I do not like those poor old ladies in the lift which make me feel not so well... The service at the reception was a disaster.
Thanks so much GLH!

I feel exactly the same way as you do re. The Surrey... the wannabe trendy lounge and graffiti adorned furniture. Yet the rooms retain the classic elegance that I prefer.

Given the vast range of styles and decor of the rooms at the Carlyle, do you feel that it's sort of taking a risk when booking? I assume at least, that this hotel would be much more willing to accommodate and appease it's guests if a room were not to our liking?

Again, I'm jumping between these choices as they are being offered through Jetsetter and right now, I cannot afford to spend full price ($450-650) for standard rooms on this trip.

Based on your advice however, I take it you'd rather stay at the Carlyle (given that the Mark would not be one of the options, hah)?
