Checking a handgun on a domestic flight...

Good day, people of TS/S. I come in peace.

I searched and only came up with one relevant thread that is about three years old, thus making its relevance questionable at best.

I am going to need to transport a single revolver and no ammo. Airline CoC says to call ahead. OK, fine. Will do that after I book the tickets.

The outbound flight I am planning on taking departs at 0655 on a Monday morning, EWR-MCO. Just how early should I show up at downstairs checkin to hand over the hard case, and what documents should I have on me just in case I get a "Your papers, please?" I'm guessing the answers are including but not limited to my NJ Firearm ID card, a copy of something proving my ownership of the weapon, and printed relevant pages from the carrier's CoC, in this case CO. Am I missing anything?
