In the US, I would agree as many hotels did not set aside rooms and there is a certain chance that the manager checking you in has some problems understanding the screen in front of her, mostly at HP locations.
Absolutely no reason to do so in Europe and Asia, rooms/suites have been set aside long before and they know your status anyway.
