I have an Italian friend who went to school at the University of Michigan years ago. So he's lived in the States and has driven there... He explains the difference between US and Italian driving quite well.

He says.... in the US, EVERYONE follows the rules. They stay between the lines, they stop at the stop signs, red lights, etc. But, when someone "breaks" the rules, there is usually an accident and ensuing chaos.

In Italy, he says it is far simpler.... Here, we start with chaos! No one follows the "rules." Drivers do not stay in their lane - many roads do not even have lane markers painted. When you approach a stop sign or red light, you KNOW that other approaching drivers may or may not stop.... and you drive accordingly. Thus, in THIS chaos environment, there are less accidents because you drive more "alert."

Seems like he has a point. Then you add the motorino factor and city driving becomes a whole new experience! We drive our Yahama 125 motorino daily through Rome and have about one near-death experience a week! Motorini add a flavor to driving you won't get in the States.

Before driving here, definitely read ahead, learn the signs, and understand it will be different! We LOVE to ride our bike through the country - the cities are definitely more challenging. If you are a visiting American, do make sure you have an IDP - they are the law for you here. For more info, see this link. And if you're thinking about driving a motorino (Don't!) you might look at this link! Good Luck!
