Seriously though, you can choose to be notified via e-mail only.
I can't remember the last time when UA actually sent me an upgrade notification by e-mail. All I get by e-mail is notifications of flight delays after they occur. I solve the telephone problem easily--all UA has is my office number. I am not there at 3 a.m.
