Have you considered taking the train from Edinburgh to Plymouth (direct, if not the fastest) and then the ferry to Roscoff? There's a night ferry some days too, whose cabins would certainly be no less comfortable that an Etap Hotel in an industrial estate at the arse end of Calais.
