No, only one transfer, at Shiojiri, where you get to sit in a quiet little station coffee shop with a view of the Japan Alps. It does take a long time, but it's very scenic.

The last time I took it was in 2000, when I went from a conference in Kyoto to visiting a friend who lived in Hachioji at the time. It was perfect for that purpose, especially since I was in no hurry and more interested in a scenic journey than in speed.
