There is a difference between a 6-MO lapchild and a 18-MO lapchild. I never had any issues when the passenger sitting next to me had a 'young' lapchild. However, it is a different story when the lapchild child was older. They wanted to grab my laptop, they wanted to climb on me, they wanted to jump from their parent onto me, etc. Their parents put them on the floor and they wanted to open my laptop bag.
We started to buy our son his own seat once he was a year old because he was getting big, etc. We put a value on how we arrive at our destination...refresh or exhausted. Holding a lap child for several hours can be exhausting.
