Unless you are gunning for elite status, upgrades are never a better redemption choice than a straight business-class award ticket, given that you have enough miles.

I think airlines must have made a killing with people upgrading to business class (US airlines excluded) - they get to sell a Y seat to bring in cash and burn off some liability in miles, and keep J for rich cats.
