Unfortunately your first option won't work either because the 241 has to originate from the UK.

Getting to HKG is slightly easier although availability is also difficult due to the recent reduction from 3 to 2 daily flights. If you are flexible with dates though you can usually find something within a couple of weeks of departure. The upside is that you could try CX J for HKG-SYD...

You'd stand a better chance with mixed classes but would you want to for a 24 hour flight....??

You're right about trying to go via LAX - no BA flights go LAX-SYD so not allowed.

Have you tried looking to buy a J ticket? ISTR figures of under £2k being mentioned with some of the ME carriers.
