I agree with you Ken.
Cash is cash- and also I have 3 times accepted VDB or downgrade voluntarily for cash- in VCE, HKG, and ORD. Once also they didn't have the downgrade for F>C (as in they didn't have enough cash at the ticket counter)- no, not AC- I was given a Visa worldwide prepaid card in the value of 4500 EUR (not as good as your BA experience, however it was still quite impressive). BTW, this was in addition to the fare differnce which was refunded directly through the payment method.
