Well, you could use your laptop as the connection point to the AC WiFi and then share that connection over another network interface on your laptop.
On a Mac, go to System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing. Similar story with Windows, but I don't know the specifics. If you have a PCMIA ("card slot") WiFi card in addition to built-in WiFi, you can share the Internet connection to the card. Otherwise, you can share the connection to your Ethernet port, and connect your travel-sized WiFi router to the Ethernet port to provide an Internet connection to your iPhone and iPad.
Not pretty, but it'll work!
