Thanks so much for the recommendation. As it turns out, we stayed in Tadoussac so as to be right in town for the whale cruise. The place we stayed was Maison Gautier, which was nothing special, but we got 2 small rooms connected to each other with a bathroom, and breakfast was included for a reasonable rate. The location was excellent, though, just off the ferry, and across the street from the main drag into town.
We ate dinner last night, and lunch today at Cafe La Boheme, which was really terrific. Great food, reasonable prices, nice people, definite boho vibe. They have wireless internet and a place for book exchange too.
Today, we went out on a whale watching cruise with Croisieres 2001; we took the catamaran instead of a zodiac boat. They did a nice job with French and English commentary, but the highlight was of course the whales. We saw three different species, and at one point we were following a pod of around 6 (it could have been more), which were swimming along, breaching. A highly recommended pursuit!
