I use a DVD plugin on my PC notebook called DVD43 (google it). It "tricks" your computer no matter what region coded dvd you have in.
When I first moved to Japan I "hard switched" my dvd region code on my laptop, then I remembered I had all these region 1 dvds I also wanted to watch, so I found that plugin and never have a problem with playing either DVDs.
