Going to MRY? I know reward ticket availability is tricky, but was there no way you could just fly to SFO instead and drive from there? It's less than 2 hours by car from SFO to MRY.

Another option is the 6-hour drive up the coast from LAX to MRY. Parts of that trip are quite beautiful, though you'd probably want to do it during daylight.
