TBIT airline announcer using last name only!

I was seeing a friend off a BR flight one late evening last week. While standing in the check-in line at TBIT, earlier flights were finishing boarding and gate agents were looking for missing passengers by name. English, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese... Then some English voice came out (forgot which airline and which flight this was) and uttered a bunch of LAST NAMES, e.g. Passenger Chen, Passenger Wong, etc, please go to gate one-oh-whatever...

Other announcers during my time there seemed to be aware that Sinosphere last names (especially as pronounced by English speakers) don't really alert anybody. Pronouncing something like Chen (which in that environment sound just the same as Chan, Chang, and Cheng) won't catch the attention of the person you're trying to call. Most other announcements that night included the full names or at least first name initials.
