Could you please explain more? I'm assuming that you're flying GUM-NRT-US, so one SWU should upgrade all segments if Z is available and you have a MBY fare, assuming that your NRT stopover is < 24 hours.

You should have been on the waitlist for the upgrade from the beginning and then at airport check in, you should have been able to get onto the BE standby list for an upgrade at the gate if ANY BE seat is available (before NRSAs claim the BE seats). Assuming that you checked in at least an hour before the flight (which is required anyway for international), there should not have been a computer problem with the upgrade at the gate.

So what happened to cause the problem?

Everyone here has been anxious to see how the new process to use SWUs on the day of departure will actually work. Please, we'd like to know the full details so that we can avoid similar issues in our own future travels.
