As someone who hardly ever checks bags, much less big heavy ones, I'd certainly rather see the people that do so pay for the privelege rather than forcing me to subsidize people who decide they really need that much stuff.

A dollar per pound for air shipment of goods seems like a pretty good deal to me. Good luck negotiating that with FedEx.
