When I take a rollerbag carryon and my "personal item," sort of a bike messenger bag, they always spot my purse as the third item and make me put it in the bike bag.
Which won't close when I do that. Just until I get through the xray, mind you. After that I board with all 3 carryons. And sometimes a coat.
