your bigger problem may be with the airport itself. At FCO you are allowed 1 piece of carry on - no matter what carrier you are traveling or the rules of the carrier you are flying. If you can arrange your duffel to hold the back pack just through security, you should have no problem. Find out what CDG allows. I have not had an AA problem with Carry On as you describe.
