I think you should state exactly what you want as "what they feel is appropriate compensation for a 16-hour delay" might be nothing. I've certainly been involuntarily overnighted owing to DL equipment issues and received nothing. You should request expense reimbursement and miles or a voucher for at least the value of your ticket.

The "weather" dodge sounds like a real stretch here.
