Westbound there isn't a huge difference (IIRC via SYD is only 50 mins longer). But eastbound the difference is more significant, and you also get to avoid having to recheck luggage, which is incentive enough to take the direct service. If it wasn't for QF (and the associated QFF pts), most Melburnians I know would do anything to avoid int/dom SYD tfrs ... if not because of the inconvenience, definitely out of principle!
