On the couple occassions when there have been problems and someone wanted to leave the secure area...i observed they were told that their boarding passes will be canceled. Although I never understood how "security" can "cancel" any boarding pass.
boarding passes will be cancelled if you leave the airport....

while i have not done this in delhi, i have in mumbai....a few years ago i regularly used to take a late night ai flight to london which originated in delhi & had a few hours stopover in mumbai....the maharajah lounge was located right before security but after immigration....i used to go through immigration from delhi so i was not allowed to leave the airport in mumbai, but i was always allowed to go to the lounge....

i also know a few people who have done this in delhi as well, so i know it can be done....
