You didn't (unfortunately, because it's a very easy process), and OK, of course you weren't expecting to have to cancel. But you could have made life easier for yourself. Given that you live outside of Europe, any possibility of cancellation was bound to be a pain in the neck if you couldn't do it online.
I would if I knew I can only cancel the ticket with registered account. I was given an ticket number and also provided a credit card number, why that is not enough to identify/authenticate me to manage my ticket?
I rarely travel with train in Europe so not much experience how things work. I can take this as a lesson learned but like to express my opinion it is not a very friendly system, both in the online processing side and the human side, that it does not take any consideration things may fall out of the boundary the system anticipated. Apparently I am not the only one who made the same "mistake" not setting up the online account when purchased the ticket and apparently the air travel problem caused by Iceland volcano eruption is beyond many people's imagination.
