I too always buy a ticket for the child, get extra bag allowance and a place for the seat (not to mention a safe place for the child).

The compelling thing for me was the calculation of acceleration x weight. If you have a rough landing at 100mph, a 10lbs baby weighs 1000lbs. I cannot hold 1000lbs.

If it fits through the xray, just check it at the gate.
