For refundable tickets, if you don't check in and don't show, you get the fare back.
But for non-refundable, if you don't call in advance, you can lose the entire ticket price not just the change fee. I learned this the hard way.
I no-showed on two itineraries, one in December on 012 ticket stock, and one in January on 006. The 012 was a little bit more difficult to use the residual value of (had to do it on the phone) and the 006 ticket showed up in my certificates.
I think there is a problem (though purely speculation) if you check in for your flight and THEN no-show on a non-refundable...
