So, for me, why would I care about this issue? The case either fixes it or I never had it to begin with. Of course, I did check how I hold my phone -- I'm left handed, but I've never held the lower left where the gap is, so maybe I just hold it "right."
I did have the yellow screen issue and I got a replacement phone without any argument or persuasion to "wait it out" so my overall experience with Apple support (this is the only one I've had through 4 iPhones, a handful of iPods, and about 8 Macs since 2001) is positive.
Well your post and the post below it bring up an interesting question - interesting to me anyway.
First, I have no reason to question the general quality of Apple support. I understand that industry-wide it is supposed to be pretty good. Of the Apple products I have owned [a 10" MacBook, an AppleView monitor, and three iPods] I have never had to use them [the MacBook got destroyed, I sold the monitor, and the iPods have had no problems].
Of course it seems obvious that most people would put a case on their brand new iPhone 4, I understand that. But it strikes me that to a large degree the iPhone 4's appeal, like most other Apple products for many/most consumers, lies in its aesthetic appeal - and it is one beautiful device. It just seems counter-intuitive to have to wrap the thing up in an ugly rubber bumber in order to make it work.
Perhaps for those who do have the problem Apple should refund to them the portion of the phone's cost that represents the design and marketing.[?]
