I was booked on a 10:36am LAX-DFW flight, and AA called me at 5:00am to say the plane changed and they could no longer upgrade me. Just as I was about to blast this person for calling at 5AM, she said "Oh, I guess this is kind of early for you, huh?". Uh, yeah!

"Since you are up now, I can book you on the 8:09 flight and give you a complimentary upgrade". Swell.
