I've heard this said a few times over the years, only when leaving Phoenix in the summertime. The pilot will get on the PA and say "we took off hot so we have delayed retracting our landing gear" as we continue to gain altitude.
I imagine he's trying to cool down the tires or gear before stowing them. I wanted to know more about this.
The gear are left down to air cool in such a situation.
Usually, the plane had a hard braking on arrival and has been turned around too fast for a proper cool down or the ambient air is too hot to do the job..which is not a surprise in PHX.
