To recap:

Fidelity takes an official hardline on who and who is not eligible to receive miles.

However, if you are not going to play games moving money back and forth to hit some higher threshold, AND you talk to a person in authority beforehand and explain to them that you are willing to move signficant funds into a Fidelity account, they are likely to make an exception both for those who are getting caught up in some "first-account" technicality and those who already have a legitimate relationship with them. The larger your current balance or the amount you will transfer in, the better.

However, based on the bonuses that I am seeing mentioned here and in other threads, AA customers would be better served at the moment to invest their low-risk funds in BankDirect.
