If I were you, I would book CX to SYD with a stopover in HKG long enough for you to fly to KUL on a paid ticket...

I.E.

LAX-HKG-SYD-HKG[stopover for how long you want to]-LAX

HINT: HKG-KUL is ridiculously expensive, so book HKG-SIN for about $250 then SIN-KUL on AirAsia for about $75... That beats paying $700++ for HKG-KUL...
AK flies HKG-KUL for HKG$1850 rt, which is currently US$237 rt. Definitely the way to go. That was based on spot-checking a few random dates several months out. Some dates may have even lower fares.
