The cheapest way is to redeem miles for an upgrade, then cancel it.
But if you are going to be on a flight anyway, you would get miles from the flight without upgrading....

It doesn't have to be
your flight...
and the flight does not need to be before the mileage expiration. Since either the act of requesting the upgrade or returning the cancelled upgrade miles resets the timer.
