Some fare rules have the following wording with regard to combining two different fares:
OPEN JAWS/ROUND TRIPS/CIRCLE TRIPS
FARES MAY BE COMBINED ON A HALF ROUND TRIP BASIS
-TO FORM SINGLE OR DOUBLE OPEN JAWS.
A MAXIMUM OF TWO INTERNATIONAL FARE COMPONENTS PERMITTED.
MILEAGE OF THE OPEN SEGMENT MUST BE EQUAL/LESS THAN
MILEAGE OF THE SHORTEST FLOWN FARE COMPONENT.
What does ‘shortest flown fare component’ mean?
As an example, I am thinking of the following double open-jaw trip, with stopovers on both the outbound and the inbound journeys:
WLG-xAKL-oPER-oJNB-DKR and MRU-xJNB-oPER-xAKL-CHC
Are the flown fare components:
- WLG-DKR and MRU-CHC, being the two fares that are being combined, or
- WLG-PER and PER-JNB and JNB-DKR and MRU-PER and PER-CHC, being the segments between stopovers, or
- WLG-AKL and AKL-PER and PER-JNB and JNB-DKR and MRU-JNB and JNB-PER and PER-AKL and AKL-CHC, being each flown segment?
Of course, if the last one then the mileage of the open-jaws has to be less than 298 miles, being the mileage of WLG-AKL. And one open-jaw (DKR-MRU) is 5,656 miles!
