There are two Marriott cards. The one you're referring to is the lesser card that doesn't yield a free annual night.
This card has a $65 annual fee, but yields a free night at a Cat. 1-5 hotel in addition to the Cat. 1-4 freebie upon first purchase. It also comes with a 30k point bonus.
