I am a Canadian citizen. My partner is Asian and not a Canadian or US citizen (legal resident). We both sail into Canada separately or together, with minimal problem, but coming into the US always presents additional delays, searches, and general unpleasantness - especially for my partner. He's been detained and interrogated for absolutely no reason at least once, and he always gets extra grilling no matter what. We keep the number of a lawyer for the day when things will inevitably get escalated. We've never had this problem while visiting other countries. If we didn't have to go to the US, we'd avoid it. It's a pity because the people are generally nice and there are some pretty places, but we dread being treated like criminals just to cross the border to the south.
