Just about every state has egregious anti-gay laws on the books, many of them unconstitutional. Some states have made efforts to repeal them, while other states just ignore them. As an example, California just within the last few months got around to starting the repeal process for a law that labeled gay people as mentally ill, the law was from the 40s if I recall.
Of course, but the fact remains that certain states are still more anti-gay than others. California enacted Prop 8 by a small margin. Similar propositions have been approved by HUGE margins in other states. Sometimes (often) it is a choice between two evils. I'm not saying everyone in FL is backwards, but I would still prefer not to spend my money there (though I may have to if my bf chooses Miami as his bday location). I prefer to vacation in Europe if I can find extended periods of time (4 days or more). There are a number of reasons for this, but one reason is that I can feel good about spending money in the many European countries with a good record on gay rights, even when the exchange rate makes me cringe.
