An often forgotten benefit of Southwest
Is that the doors do not close until 2-3 minutes before departure! - So, if you're like me and don't mind cutting it a little close, and not spending forever waiting in an airport - you can put your mind at ease a little bit. Sure, if the flight is full or near full, you better be there 10 mins before or they will give your seat away, but 10 minutes is really cutting it close. I think some legacies close the door at 15-20 before, or at least try to.... Recently for a 9:15 A flight, I arrived at the airport at 8:20. It took 25 minutes to get through security, and 10 mins to walk to the gate. So at 8:55, when I arrived, boarding was just about to begin for the 9:15 flight, and we were off on time....
As a sidenote, it worked out well I mangled the non EB/A list check in a little and got B-10, which allowed for time for me to grab some food! Still plenty of good seats available when I boarded.
Oh, and yes, no checked bags when pulling an operation like this - which is easy too -, because the bins are far from full often, since people can check their bags free, was not a problem!
