FWIW, this isn't a United-thing...you'll find the same policy on all of the major carriers. (Although I totally understand that overall frustration/irony of the situation)
Thanks, yeah I guess they have to follow their rules, but it's not like I'm really trying to pull something sneaky. I tried to get a flight from DEN and I arrived too late there so the only way to make it is via SFO.

I do need to purchase and additional flight back to DEN for my return from LHR, I will probably do that at the airport. Maybe I'll see the mood of the agent when I'm doing that to decide how to go, but yeah, just miss the SFO-DEN flight.

One more question.

Do people think I should do an online check in for SFO-LHR before I get on the SYD-LHR leg of my flight?

I may consider the 170 for peace of mind, but I wasn't ever going to give that agent the sale with her approach to me. I may just talk to the agent at the airport and pay there if they won't waive it.
