To be fair, the airlines created this expectation through their own actions. If you commoditize a product to its bare-bones core and compete purely on price it becomes incredibly hard later to reset client expectations back to a higher price.
I'm no economist or aviation expert.... but what will the airlines do if the passengers vote with their money? When more and more people decide not to fly because of cost, can the airlines lower prices again?
As much as I hated Ryanair, it was a really cheap way to get from point A to point B in Europe. Yes, it was about as fun as riding Greyhound buses in the US, but I just view it as transportation. If Ryanair is allowed to start its own airline in the US, I wonder how the public will react.
