The fare you paid for your 2nd itinerary has it starting at YYZ, not BOS and allowing you to essentially skip that segment and fly BOS-ORD isn't likely to fly.
so for my scenario, it should work no?

sfo-den-tpa (all ua metal adn tix) with my den-tpa* leg giving me just a 37 minute conx/turn at tpa so i should be able to ask about changing to the earlier den-tpa flight 4 hours prior, right? (and it would be 4 hours prior to my original den-tpa flight not my sfo-den flight? not that it matters as i have to do it at sfo and not over the phone-or can i? [and if so, is there a profile code in case the agent has a brain freeze or simply ask about the "same day confirmed change"]) sorry to sound like such a rookie but i've never done a confirmed same day change .

*the earlier flight den-tpa pried out way to high
