I read it as ML + wife travelling together on one 2-4-1 redemption. Thus total cost 100,000 BA Miles plus (£288 x 2). So it's only £33K pa spend for two years to get 100K BA Miles - which is not exactly outlandish.
I think its also worth bearing in mind that few people rely on just one source of collection for their BA Miles. Part of that 33k could have been to pay for BA travel, hotels, tesco, Starwood hotels on-line shopping, etc etc etc
