(Just for the curiosity's sake, what if both of them are UA ticket/metal? Will it be more likely?)
(BTW, should I fly BOS-YYZ-ORD, must I clear both Canadian and US immigration?)

Same day change is for UA operated flights and you must keep the exact same routing. Ordinarily I would say that may have success doing what you propose on the day of the flight at the airport in BOS on a standby basis (changing over to UA metal), but I think your chances are going to be zero because of the separate PNR issue. The fare you paid for your 2nd itinerary has it starting at YYZ, not BOS and allowing you to essentially skip that segment and fly BOS-ORD isn't likely to fly.
