Just to follow up: taking the collective advice, I did need to cancel at "the last minute." Indeed, I was at the airport and unsure of whether a code would work at another rent-a-car company. I actually saw my Number 1 envelope sitting in the slot. After I was successful in getting my car from the other outfit, I cancelled my Hertz award reservation online. The points were re-credited immediately. So an award rez can make a good back-up if nothing else is plausible.
