It was often my experience that those smaller shops and restaurants rarely ever did accept AmEx.

I didn't notice acceptance any lower on the trip I just got back form but I also didn't use my AmEx nearly at all since I got the Schwab card and the MR points aren't worth nearly 5 cents to me.
