I would second the 90 minutes recommendation, based on my experiences a couple of weeks ago.
YVR recently overhauled the "security" setup. It used to be clear US CBP, then "security." Now, it's the other way around, with an additional hoop to jump through to get to the checkpoints.
The line just to get into the "security" area was very long, snaked around the corner. All they do is check your BP on a computer in that line. Nonetheless, they take a VERY long time doing it. I don't know exactly how long it took, as I'm a NEXUS member, and I got to go in another line (actually, there was no line on that side). But the regular line had about 150 people in it....and frankly, I might be underestimating. This was at about 11:00 a.m. on a weekday.
After that check, you go into the lineup for the "security" checkpoint. This is where it's utterly ridiculous. I was in the lane to the very left, when I got there, there were four parties (no kids involved) ahead of me. It still took about 10-15 minutes to get from putting my stuff in a bin to walking through the magnetometer, due to extremely poor CATSA staffing.
That specific checkpoint consisted of five people:
1. The bin feeder/BP checker.
2. The x-ray operator.
3. Male secondary search dude (at the magnetometer).
4. Female secondary search dudette (at the magnetometer).
5. One secondary bag search guy.
The issue was with dude #5. He was busy pawing through someone's bag, and swabbing several items. The problem was that there was nobody else helping him, and the line stood still for about 10-15 minutes. Even his co-workers were giving him the glare. The line to that checkpoint (also where the pilots usually go) grew, easily, from five people to about 35 in this time.
Yes, this is turning into a rant, but CATSA staffing is abhorrent. Credit where credit is due, the TSA at least properly staffs checkpoints, and they do have it in the back of their mind to keep things moving. CATSA does not.
And this does not include the inevitable line-up to clear U.S. Customs and Immigration.
So, yes, 90 minutes easily.
