I had no idea you couldn't combine them either until I went to redeem 4 x $250 systemwide certs at my local UA ticketing office. Seems a bit silly as we received them on a family itinerary (why do travel plans always go pear shaped on holidays with your family????).
Didn't really matter though as I had 4 separate itineraries to apply them to. I just don't see why they are transferable but not combinable.
