IMO, none of the three hotels on that list which I have stayed at -- Westlake, Indian Wells, Highlands -- are unmissable.

People have had great experiences at Carmel Highlands and if your stay goes well, so will you. Unfortunately, many have, like me, experienced major catastrophes there as well.

August is not the right time of year to go to Palm Springs or Indian Wells.

I haven't tried Aviara yet so can't comment on it. With that possible exception, there are a lot of decent or good California Hyatts but none that are truly unmissable.
