If you buy an e-ticket directly from AA, AA wants to see the credit card, because they are on the hook if the ticket was purchased by fraud.

If you buy an e-ticket through a travel agent, AA doesn't care, because it is the travel agent who is on the hook if it's fraud. When you buy through a travel agent, you pay the travel agent, and then the travel agent pays the airline.
