More important than a credit card, make sure you have a 2nd source to CASH.

I was in Bucharest, 1st night of my arrival the local ATM ate my debit card when I went to withdraw spending cash. I showed up next morning, and the Bank told me they *cannot* release my debit card to me, but have to send it back to the U.S. branch as per security clearance.

I had a credit card, but in many places around the world, such as Bucharest, you need cash for a lot of things, and a 2nd credit card is not as helpful compared to another cash card.
