PEK: Time Required?

Hi Everyone,

I have a PEK-NRT flight on JL leaving at 3:20pm, however I have to get to Beijing that day from Shanghai. I see that Air China and China Southern both offer pretty frequent flights between the cities, so it looks like there are many options to choose from.

I am hoping the group's experience can help me with a few questions:

1. Is there any appreciable difference between the two airlines? From what I've read, both seem fine for a quick trip like Shanghai-Beijing.

2. Does either airline interline luggage with JL? It would be a big perk to not have to re-check luggage.

3. How much time should I expect to need once I land? As my flight isn't until 3:20, I didn't know if I'd need to be there at say, noon, or perhaps later (1pm?).

4. This may be a newbie question, but I assume I'll have to clear customs when leaving China - is this a slow process?

Thanks very much for your help!
